A biting wind and dipping mer cury brought the holiday spirit to many thousands of persons who lined the streets of Greenville Fri day night to watch the annual Christmas parade. The crowd was estimated at 10,000 by the JayCees who were in charge. Three of the dozen floats enter ed won $50 first prizes. They were the North Baptist Church for the best religious float, Faith class of the Wesley Methodist Church for the most unique, and Miller Grove for the best float in the general division. It was the second such prize for the North Baptist Church, whose float took first place in the Christ mas parade last year. Pictures of the winning floats appear on Page A-15 of today’s Herald-Banner. Forty-two units lined up on Lee Street and left promptly at 6:30 p.m. for a march east to the Mar ket Square then back on Washing ton. Included were cars of officials and representing various clubs, marching units, bands and floats. The siren heard just before the start of the parade was a Gray- Sorrells Ambulance. They took Mrs. Nettie Hicks, 2311 Sayle, to a local hospital following a fall at the corner of Lee and Sayle. She was reported “resting well’ Sat urday night. Minutes before the parade be gan, one of the floats was discov ered with a flat tire, but it was quickly changed and the entry took its place in the parade line. The Community High School Band was a last-minute entry and one float was withdrawn when it was not completed. The first marching unit was the East Texas State College ROTC Grenadiers who performed along the route, even winding through the spectators on the sidewalks. Horses pranced as they and their riders were judged for the prizes in that division. The $15 first prizes were awarded to Bob Norris, Route 5, Greenville in the men’s class; Mrs. Bob Norris in the women’s class and Bobby Coffee, 3210 Oneal, in the children’s division. Second prizes of $5 went to Gerald Williams. Route 2, Greenville, men: Linda Johnson, Route 1, Greenville, women and Donald Bennett, 1606 Adams, Peniel, chil dren. Judges for the floats were State Representative Edgar Hutchins Jr., County Judge Ralph Halli of Rockwall and Mrs. Paul Fulks of Wolfe City, Albert Spradling of Greenville judged the horses and riders. The group viewed the par ade from a stand at the court- Lee PARADE, on page 2 SANTA CLAUS ARRIVED IN GREENVILLE at the Christmas Parade Friday night and was on the JayCee float with a huge Yuletide gift bearing the reminder to “Shop in Greenville.” The jolly St. Nick, who flew in by jet direct from the North Pole, had a nerve and a smile for the nearly 10,000 spectators who lined the streets.
