Should Be Defeated. The State dispensary bill proposed S1by Senator Moody of Tuscaloosa iscopied closely after the South Carolina, i dispensary law. The main purpose of n ' I the bill is to remove the responsibili- al■ ties of the whisky traffic from individ- er* uals and to place it under the control psof State officers. Briefly stated, the ' 5,-bill provides that each county seat, *01where whisky is now sold, shall he en- 1I1 titled to one dispensary : that each city j,shall be entitled to one dispensary for 1 4each 10,000 inhabitants or fraction j 6thereof; that 110 less than a half pintshall be sold to one individual, and r*)that a second purchase con not be made p1on the same day; that the dispensers in 1* | charge shall not receive less than $500rnor more than $5,000 per annum. There are many reasons why the billrshould not beeome a law, not the least elt;of which is, that it converts the State 11government into a vast machine whichcan he used for advancing personalinterest. We have seen as a result ofI1the dispensary law the advancementClof Tillman and Evans, of South Caro- Iulina, who, as dependents upon theirtlmerits for public favors, would now he11privates in their native State. Disor-der, destruction and death have follow-aPifted the operation of the law and would cause its repeal but for the army of in- , j spectors and dispensers whose influ\ ence sets at defiance the will of theo!Iplain people.Whisky and politics are too closelyfI«allied now. With the whisky interestIcentralized as they would he under thedispensary law, no verdict could be se-i-*cured in opposition to the combinedinfluence of the State and dispensaryofficers. Aside from tin* above bainfulconditions, the purchasing officersPt;e11tisIwould have unlimited opportunities toswindle the State, and tin* people, intthe purchase of whiskies for the di*Or I pensary use. A better title for the en11racting clause would be: “An act, en-11titled an act to further corrupt tin1ilState governmert of Alabama by«placing the sale of whiskies under Mucontrol of State officers,”—Huntsvilh11r j Mercury.eListen, My Son,1
