John T. Baker, age 70, was killed with a shotgun by Andy Coombs, during an altercation west of Solsberry, Tuesday morning, Nov. 20. Baker was riding on a wagon with his wife, when Coombs appeared with a shotgun and told Bak er he was going to kill him. Coombs fired and Baker tumbled into the road, lying half under the wagon, mortally wounded. With the words, “I always help a man when he is down,’* Coombs started to drag the body of his victim aside, asking the wife what doctor she wanted. Men working on the road nearby summoned assistance. Coombs telephoned to the sheriff of Greene county and gave himself up. He was summoned before a Greene county grand jury, Saturday. Coombs was a respected citizen of the Solsberry neigh borhood, but trouble between him and Baker is said to have started from an an argument over road construction.
