Lady Aztecs return six players By CLINT HAVER Dispatch Correspondent BARSTOW — The Barstow High School girls basketball team is creeping into their season un sure of what awaits them around the corner. With only one senior on this year’s team, the Lady Aztecs are a youthful bunch with some ge nuine talent. “We have some good ball play ers on this year’s team,” second year coach Tony Moss said. “I can put any five players on the court and they can play.” The Aztecs will feature some varsity experience as they return six players from last year’s 9-13 team. Juniors Rose Duran, Laura Kurisu, Lisa Gately and Heather Floyd return along with sopho mores Somer Bonar and Yvonne Hijoe. Barstow also features two freshman on the team, as Carolyn Barron and Roberta Chavez plan on helping the Aztecs in their pursuit of a San Andreas League championship. Last year, the Lady Aztecs showed signs of bulldogging and selfishness. This year Barstow will concentrate on working as a team and using all 15 of its players. “We're definitely gonna play as a team,” Moss said. “As a whole, we go real deep.” The responsibility of making the squad play together lies on starting point-guard Floyd. “We don’t really have a team leader because we are focusing on team play,” the coach said. “Heather will probably step up as the leader on the court just be cause that’s how she is.” There will be plenty of depth in the backcourt as Gomez, Hijoe and Duran will be joined by sophomores Alexa Anders, April Hollis and Tammy Drury. Juniors Priscilla Garcia and Cindy Slader should also see plenty of time on the court. The inside game is the question mark for the Lady Aztecs as they don’t have a lot of height. Along with the freshman duo of Barron and Chavez, the paint will be maintained by Gately, Kurisu, Bonar and junior transfer Tanya Miller. Coach Moss feels that despite the youth, the Aztec’s hard-nosed determination should lift them into contention for the coveted SAL title. “We should do pretty well, but it’s hard to say until league comes around.”
