Major Vincent W. Howard, for merly director of operations and training at Thomasville Army Air Field, Thomasville, Georgia, has been appointed commanding officer of the field, succeeding Lieutenant Colonel James Van G. Wilson, who has been transferred. Major Howard is a native of East St. Louis, Illinois and attend ed Knox College at Galesburg, [I. Before entering the armed services he was employed by the Chrysler Motor Company. In August, 1939 he enlisted as a flying cadet in the air corps and received flight train ing at Randolph Field, Texas. Major Howard received his com mission as a lieutenant pilot in the RAF on May 11, 1940 and after several assignments in the states, was appointed flight leader of the first squadron of American planes to be based in Iceland. Eighteen months of arduous flying was made over the snow-capped mountains and the treacherous waters of the cold region in continual search for enemy submarines. After his return to the states Major Howard was assigned to the Ist fighter command, and station ed at Ft Myers, Florida. The 104th observation squadron under his command was transferred to Thomasville Army Air Field in March, 1943 and he has remained here until the present time. Al though the position of commanding officer of Thomasville Army Air Field offers many responsibilities and a great deal of work, Major Howard looks forward to his new task with zeal and intends to keep improving activities on the airfield in every possible way.
