Col. Robt. Stevenson, DeadCol. Robt. Stevenson, -pioneer of the placer diggings, B. C.’s first custom officer, died iu Vancouver on Tuesday, Nov. 28tb, at the age of 84 years. Bob Stevenson and Jim Copland came to Rock Creek in 1860.The late Bob Stevenson was oneof the last survivors of those hardy men who joined iu the rush for the newly*discovered gold diggings on the Fraser river, he was a link between the romantic past of British Columbia and the commercial present. He was one of those who brought into being an empire of vast natural wealth which, until the discovery of gold, had only be* ing exploited by the fur trader.Born at Williamstown, Glengarry County, Ontario, on July 28* 1838, Col. Stevenson was only 20 years of age when he joined in the rush to the newly-found Eldorado of the West. He reached theilower Fraser river in 1859, but finding that the first fever of excitement in respect to the wealth of 61 the bars in that stream having subsided, he adventured into the little* mm -known Similkameen River districta \r .Three children survive the death« •of Ool. Stevenson. They are Mrs. J. L. Watson, of Victoria, and William and Robert Stevenson, who occupy the home farm at Sardis.
