n1Funeral of J. E. CowlesThe funeral of James Earnest Cowl-P* es was held at the Fourth Ward meet- , ins house In Ogden on- Friday afternoon, Nov. 24. There was a large h attendance at the services of old ^ends and neighbors* The floral tri- ^ butes were numerous and beautiful. Mrs. Mary Farley, Mr. Orson Griffin g ai d Miss Elsie Shorten rendereds sev 2 eral beautiful and appropriate vocal selections. HA most impressive sermon, was delivered by Apo6tle David O. McKay. ^ The speaker emphasized the Cact that j although the father is gone the fam- y ily is blessed in still having a mother j who can keep the children together, j He alluded to a visit he had* made tc | c Mr. Cowles during his Illness and mentioned the impressions he had received of Mr. Cowle s strength of char acter and sterling manhood. iHe said, “Whatever may have been his faults or weaknesses, he was no hypocrit. He made no pretentions higher th?n he lived. In closing he expressed his deep sympathy for those bereaft Judge Nathan J. Harris, a lifetime friend of Mr. Cowles, who was expect ted to speak was detained at the last . moment, but sent the follow! rf letter. Ogden City, Utah. Nov. 24 1911.Mr. W. H. Cowles and family, City. D.-ar friends:I would very much like to attend .your son’s funeral this afternoon and to speak a few words to his memory, as reqeuested by you, but unfortunately my official duties make It utterly impossible for me do every moment of Iny time during the re mainder of the day being occupied therewith.I assure you that all of you. and especially yourself and wife, the aged parents, and the surviving wife and children of your son. have my sincere eat, sympathy in your hour of bereav-mrnt.I have known FTrnest from a bey, know his noble traits of chiracter, his integrity, his whole-soledness, his symnathy for the unfortunate, and his readiness to assist all in need to the extent of his ability. I know of his ambitions and his desires. Likewise T know of his weaknesses and frailties ard imperfections. w'hlch like the background of* a beautiful picture, cause the better qualities to stand out In contrast, revealing and emphasizing the nobility of sole, his real self, the true man. as God. Who judges the heart and the inter tions and deg. ires, sees and measures him. Too often we look upon the backgrounds the real picture and judge men by their weaknesses, losing sight cf the real worth of the so'e cf God’s children. whom He has created In (his own image.I can bear witness to the many f’o^d qualities that your son possessed In talking with a mutual friend recent ty he remarked. Earnest was good | to every one but himself’’. How muc I more happiress would there be in this world if th?.t could truly be said of more of us.Now T only wish T had it in irv power.to say something that would ''nnsoln on* comfort you. but I realize that there Is only one source of comfort on Whom we mav rely with perfect assuurance of help.
