Carpenter Working In Smith Home Is Arrested. Opening a jewel casket containing nearly $500 worth of jewelry, a thief stole two diamond rings valued at $175 from the home of Mrs. Charles Smith, 2030 West Baltimore street. The loss of the jewels was not discovered until yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. Smith opened the box to clean two gold watch chains. After a careful search of the horttte for the missing jewels the police of the Southwestern district were notified. Last night Louis Baylin, 24 years old, 77514 West Mulverry street, was arrested, charged with taking the rings. Though Baylin denied all knowledge of the rings, a key was found in his room which opened the old-fashioned lock. Baylin said he used the key to lock a small tool chest. Mrs. Smith said she had last noticed the ringe Wednesday morning. After locking the box she placed the key in a hiding place. Baylin was working on a carpen tering job, and, Mrs. Smith asserted, had free access. There are four small children in the house and Mrs. Smith thinks one of them frightened the thief before he had a chance to secure the rest of the jewels. A watch and chain valued at $100 in another com partment of the box was not touched. Justice Ulrich, of the Southwestern dis trict, released Baylin on $1,500 bail for a hearing this morning.
