By EUGENE FINLEY JR. (Staff Writer) The Galesburg Human Rela tions Commission will discuss merging the commission and the Equal Opportunity Office Wednesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The commission has suggest ed the two city agencies merge and a professional in human services be hired to operate the combined unit. Mrs. Caroline Golterman, commission chairman, said the meeting will also be open for suggestions and opinions from the public. She said 35 individuals and representatives of community organizations have been invited to attend the meeting. Mrs. Golterman has contend ed that the advantages of a merger include reduced operat ing costs, more efficient coordi nation of activities and less du plication of services. The merger proposal was made a month ago by Mrs. Gol iterman, Some City Council members, however, proposed such a merger long before that. Opposes Change Mrs. Iona Hendricks, execu tive director of Equal Opportun ity Office, has said she is op posed to the merger, while Mrs. Louise Wilder, executive direc tor of Human Relations Com mission, favors it. Mrs. Hendricks said today she had no comment about the meeting. She indicated she had not been invited. Mrs. Golter man said she would receive an invitation today. Mrs. Hendricks has indicated her office does not need to be merged with the commission. She contends that her office is operating effectively. Dissension between the two agencies became apparent ear lier this year while they were both located in offices at 72 S. Cherry St. The agencies were later moved to City Hall and separated. The most recent clash came over a discrimination charge fil ed by the commission against the Equal Opportunity Office.
