By BOB FOSTER Good music is enjoying its most prosperous era in the his tory of America. A check this week with a number of good music dealers indicate that the surge in high fidelity equip ment sales is catching up to the sale of television sets. An indication that this is be coming an important factor in broadcasting can be found in the files of the Federal Com munications Commission KRON has reapplied for an FM channel. KFRC this week made application for an FM outlet and a new FM station KSFR FM owned by Al Levitt will be taking the air from San Bruno Mountain shortly. NEW STATION The Peninsula got its first fully owned and operated FM station recently when KPEN took the air from King Moun tain back of Redwood City. All this has happened fast. Last year FM was presumed to be a lost cause, but when spon sors realized the number of high-fidelity sets in American homes, they discovered a new source for reaching a usually high income market. HAPPY INITIATE This week I ran inito a gentleman at my favorite cof fee shop who recently purchas ed for himself a hi-fi outfit. He was, as are most people, happy with his new device. “The thing I like” our new found friend explained “is the lack of commercials on sta tions like KDFC at Sausalito and San Jose’s KSJO. This is the problem that FM broadcasters have long faced. They know the public loves the station because of the lack of commercials, but at the same time they know they can’t keep putting out the music without the commercials. WELL-HANDLED Fortunately for all concern ed, the FM operators know their audience won’t stand for the abusive practices of AM radio, and when they are lucky enough to get commercials handle them in a much more considerate manner. KDFC supplies a daylong procession of light and semi classical music. KEAR sends forth some pretty heavy stuff in high fidelity for the true long-hair. KSJO specializes in the soft easy-to-listen-to type of music. Unfortunately KCBS, KGO and KNBC’s FM outlets just repeat what’s on the air from their AM operation. Aside from a few live music shows, they contribute nothing to FM listeners. KPFA in Berkeley makes with long-hair music, classic drama and tedious discussions on love life of the Gila monster or some other such learned subject. TONIGHT ON TV, 6:30 P.
