Baum wrote more than 50 books and plays, continuing the Wizard tales until his death here in May. 1919.Fred Stone and Dave Montgomery made “The Wizard of Oz” famous in 1904 when they appeared in the play at I ho old Majestic theatre, on Columbus Circle in New York. The show ran four years and a fifth onthe road.Stone, now back on Broadway arid* a fling at motion pictures himself, is an interested longdistance observer as Mervyn LeRoy brings the story to the screen for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.Frank Morgan plays Stone's original title role.
