* • •New Albany, Ind., Dec. 4.—Burnsreceived while attempting to start a fire with coal oil at her home in the Grant Line road, four miles from New Albany, near midnight Saturday, caused the death of Mrs. Edward Case at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. A daughter Mi s. Nora Lynch, 18, and twosons, Raymond Case, 10, and John Case, 17, are in a critical condition at St. Edward’s hospital, New Albany, where they were removed from their country residence after their mother’s death. They were burned while trying to save Mrs. Case from the flames in which she was wrapped after an oil can exploded in her hand.The husband, son-in-law, Leland Lynch, and another daughter, Miss Bertha Case, were not at home at the time of the accident, the men having gone to New Albany on business, while the girl went to a friend’s house to spend the night She wss not notifiedof the tragedy until yesterday morning, but Mr. Case and Mr. Lynch returned home shortly after midnight to find the injured four swathed in bandages and under the influence of anesthetics administered by a physician to ease their pain. They had been carried into the house by neighbors, who had found the victims of the explosion lying in various parts of the yard, where they had collasped after running fromthe house.Mrs. Case and her three children visited a neighbor Saturday and did not return to their home until after 11 o’clock at night. On their arrival at the house they discovered that the fires had gone out. They went to a bedroom on the second floor and, on ac count of the chill, the mother decided to build a fire in a drum stove in the room. Her children stood about her as she placed the kindling on the grate and touched a match to it. The flames threatened to die out and Mrs Case decided to pour gasoline on the embers. The oil can exploded as she held it in her hand, the content being sprinkledextinguished the blaze in the house with water fetched from a nearby well. Neighbors, aroused from their sleep by the commotion at the Case home, came to the assistance of the injured and carried them into the house.Dr. J. W. Baxter, of New Albany, was summoned and, accompanied byMrs. Baxter, went in an automobile to the scene of the accident. First he applied lotions then put the victims of the accident under the influence of anesthetics in order to alleviate their suffering. Mrs. Case lingered for eleven hours. At no time was there any hope entertained for her recovery, as her body was charred and burned so that the flesh fell from the bones in many places. Immediately after her death the three children were taken to the hospital in New Albany.Raymond, the younger son, was burned about the hands and face and, it is believed, inhaled some of the flames. He is said to be at the point of death. The other boy, John, also suffered severe burns on the face and hands, but the attending physicians say he has a slight chance for recovery.Mrs. Lynch, the young wife of Le-land Lynch, is in a critical condition and, even though she recovers, physicians say that in all probability her eyesight has been impaired permanently. She received burns about the hands, arms and face, her eyebrows and eyelashes as well as her hair being singed off. It is feared she also inhaled flames.Mrs. Case was 44 years of age and had resided in Flt;oylt;i c unty since her marriage. She was Miss Mary Gresham, daughter of John Gresham, of Harrison county. She and her family moved to the home in the Grant Line road from EJwardsville only a month ago. Besides the husband and children she leaves four brothers and three sisters, all of whom save one sister, Mrs. Amanda Myers, of New Albany, reside in Harrison county.Go straight on to your goal.
