John A. Allison, one of the best known farmers and stock raisers in Daviess county, died at 11 Thursday morning ,at his home in Veale township, at the age of seventy years. John A. Allison was one of the county’s most peaceable, law abiding and most highly respected citizens, beloved by his neighbors and honored by everyone who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. His death was due to general de bility. He had been in poor health for a long time, and when the final summons came it did not come as a surprise to those near and dear to him. The deceased Mr. Allison was born in Washington township, this county, April 23, 1838. He was the son of Joseph and Mary (Ragsdale) Allison, and was of Irish-German de scent. The parents were natives of Pennsylvania and South Carolina, born in 1792 and 1800, and died in Daviess county in 1873 and 1870, re spectively. About 1817 the father came to Daviess county and settled in Washington. He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and was one of the pioneers of the county. Mr. Allison, who died Thursday, received a common school education and for seven years was a teacher in the country schools in Veale town ship. In 1877 he located on his present farm, and he and his sons added one strip of land after another to their possessions until today they haveand holdings of some 700 acres. The deceased Mr. Allison leaves an estate valued at near $20, 000. He was the architect of his own fortune, November 4, 1863. John A. Alli son was united in marriage to Mary Carroll, a native of this county, born in 1843, the daughter of Dixon Car roll, one of the early settlers of the county. .To this union seven children were born, three of whom are dead. The dead are William D., Smith M., and Robert K. Allison. The surviv ing children are Owen C., Isaac, Mrs. Garret Corzine and Mrs. Eph Don aldson. In politics Mr. Allison was a dem ocrat and cast his first vote for Stephen A. Douglass. Fifty years ago he united with the Methodist church, and he died an ardent be liever in his faith.
