Girls cageEllis, Trail tip WarriorsBy DAVE STRAUBBloom Trail employed some pressure defense to pull off a 55-50 girls’ basketball win over visiting Crete-Monee Monday night. The Blazers (1-2) trailed by a 25-22 count going into the second half, and traded buckets with the Warriors until late in the third quarter. Down 33-29, guard Shaun Bell came up with some key steals, and converted them into quick baskets. Lisa McCormick added a follow-up shot, helping Trail to knot it, 35-35.Crete-Monee answered with a bank shot by Michelle Davis, as well as a 15-foot jumper by Beth Poelstra, putting the Warriors ahead, 39-37 Kim Ellis then tied it with a short jumper to end the period.THE PRESSURE paid larger dividends going into the fourth qu^ter as Bell tallied a pair of layups off steals. Ellis added a free throw to give the Blazers a 44-39 advantage.“We had been in that 2-3 zone for most of the game,” Blazer coach Anthony Kennedy said. “But we had to create something. We had to test their guards and we got a few key steals.”Crete-Monee coach J R. Jennings offered a different explanation of the game. “We didn’t run our offense, he said. “We didn’t get the ball to Michelle Davis, like we did against TF South (a 50-35 win) in our first game She scored about 20 points for us and I know she didn’t have that many tonight. We just didn’t get her the ball.”In fact, Davis was limited to nine points. The Warrior center launched just seven shots, hitting four Shir-nette Harris led the Warriors with 12 points and Cathy Phason had 10. “Phason did a nice job,” Jennings said.AFTER LISA MCCORMICKSfollow-up shot, which put the Balzers up by six with four minutes to go. Shelly Gallagher. Harris and Davis tallied baskets while Phason chipped in a free throw to put Crete up, 48-47 But Ellis came back with two bank shots to regain the lead for Trail Bell then added two layups to make it 55-48. Phason scored at the buzzer for the final tally of the contest.Ellis paced the Blazers with a game-high 28 points, while Bell added 18 But Ellis converted just 13 of 34 field goal tries Many of her shots were from close range. “We missed too many easy shots, Kennedy said. “Were in bad shape right now and our concentration is negative. It just isn’t there. But it was a big game for us because we needed to get that first win.As for Ellis, Kennedy added: “She can be dominant if she gets her game together. She should have scored a lot more points tonight. She missed too many layups.”The Warriors used two layups to spark an 11-point first quarter Crete-Monee also got help with some outside shooting by Poelstra, Harris and Gallagher, which spurred the visitors to an early 7-2 leadELLIS, HOWEVER, scored on two short jumpers, a pair of follow-up shots and a bank shot to make it 11-10 by the end of the period She tallied all of her team’s 10 points in the opening eight minutes.“We didn’t play defense either,” Jennings said. We weren’t covering the back door Trail did a good job of getting their people open for shots, and we didn't react well enough to stop those layups.”The Warriors came out strong at the start of the second period by running off seven straight points. Harris tallied five of those points with a pair of layups and a charity toss.
