Woman killedin Underwoodmobile home fireUNDERWOOD — BerthaCoffelt, 86, Underwood, waskilled here Sunday (Dec. 1) in amobile home fire.Iowa State Fire Marshal’soffice is investigating the fire, according to PottawattamieCounty Sheriff Michael Kerns.Coffelt was in one of two mobile homes connected by a walkway when the fire began shortly before 4 p.m., said Kerns. 'Hie victim lived in the mobile home with her son,Alfred.Coffelt, her son, and fiveother family members were inthe trailer when the fire began,said Kenneth Saar, chief of theCrescent Volunteer FireDepartment. The party smelledsmoke and left in a group fromthe trailer, Saar said. AlfredCoffelt said he thought hismother was with the group butonce outside they discovered she was missing. Bertha Coffelt apparently walked the wrong way into another room, Saarsaid. .Pottawattamie County , Medical Examiner Dr. Samuel Rosa said the victim was apparently overcome by smokebefore she was burned.NATIVE OF AVOCABom in Avoca, Coffelt lived (in the Avoca, Harlan, Oakland, Neola and Underwood areas , most of her life.
