Inflation...some readjust to it, but some find it hardBy K J CHAPPSOUTHWEST — Has the cost of living affected the lifestyles of local residents? Comments ranged from “You bet it has” to “That’s the way it is” from shoppers at Ordman’s Park and Shop in Mokena where the HERALD conducted a recent “man on the street” survey.“I just hate to go to the store,” said Alma Wilson of Arbury Hills “You feel real good before you go to the grocery store and then your day is shot.”Her daughter, Leilani Swick, said she goes into the store with “blinders.” “You have your list in front of you and don’t look to the right or left. I have to leave the store with exactly what I need,” the Arbury Hills housewife said.Mrs. Swick explained she buys just as much as she did before but “not the same things.” For recreation, “we go fishing with the kids a lot. It’s cheaper,” she said, adding that she has four children and “one on the way.”A construction worker in Orland Park, when questioned about the cost of living, stopped with a big smile and said, “no problem. I come here every day to buy steaks for lunch. They’re the same price they’ve always been. It’s bread and stuff that’s gone up.” Checking his grocery bag, Kerry Durkin noticed the price of steak had increased by a dime, but commented that “wasn’t bad.”Clarence Cramsie, Francis Rd.,Frankfort Township, said the cost of living is bad, “especially when you’re on social security. You can’t make ends meet.” He explained he recently left his janitorial job and was living off social security.you can’t do it, you just can’t do it,” Cramsie added.Mrs. William Hagen, Lincolnwood Hills, said although “we can’t afford to do the things we used to do,” higher costs have not greatly affected her and her husband’s lifestyles. “There are just two of us,” she said, “and there are a lot of corners we can cut, whereas families with children have it a lot rougher.“I feel so sorry for people on social security or pensions,” she added. When asked if the rising cost of living affected her lifestyle, Marilyn Mossell of Frankfort answered, “No, I can’t say it has. We live conservatively anyway.”Mrs. Mossell explained she lives alone with two of her seven children. “We live so differently; things have improved since when we had seven,” she said. She added that she does her major food shopping once every six weeks and occasionally runs to local stores for milk or bread.“I guess we stay at home a lot,” saicfc Mrs. Jean Kapinus of Mokena in response to how rising costs are affecting her lifestyle. “We entertain at home and don’t go out for dinner as much.”
