Dr. Earl Bates Talks on Indians At Little ValleyLittle Vallfty, Dec. 4——Ait interesting' Ulk an th# tocic, the Indians Lived in Little Valley,” was given by E»r. Ear! A. Bates, noted physical ethnologist and Indian .authority, at 1%pt evening's regular meeting of the Little Valley Rotary club in the Kock City hotel.Because of the unusual interest shown in his talk. Dr. Bates, who is an instructor at Cornell uni-verstiy, was engaged to address the club again in January.He explained that Little Valley was a natural place for Indians to settle because of the area's fertile valleys and natural water suocly. Dr. Bates pointed out that because of a superstition Sin Indian family grew only enough food, mostly .corh, squash and beans, which tbev planted In the same-hill, for itself and a f,too? rels-; live/' and never planned on any ! surplus.Blame* Annuitie*The speaker blamed the government annubiws, and the people- for allowing the annuities, for continuation of the no-surplus practice.A ra Milks, director of the Dairymen's League and program : chairman. introduced Dr. Bates, who is an honorary chieftain of eighteen Indian tribes.Dr. Bates founded the Indian welfare movement and received New England medal for having made the greatest contribution to American education by his plan of developing the Indian, -to a self-supporting status. He reorganized the federal bureau of Indian affairs under Herbert Hoover.Lester E- Russel, president of the club, presided.A number of guests, including Anthony Fedelh J. M.
