M. rc Hooke for defendant .'* Charles Joseph Beard aaid he wan n slaughterman, living at Mt. George. Hr ntarted working for Oldfield on lat Hep tom her, 1B30, and workad for him nntil Slat September, 1940. The only time he miaaed wna four daya in July nud two daya in Anguat. He waa not paid regularly. From lat May he waa paid 15/-per week until the end of June, and from then until Slat September £1 a week. He waa employed aa n potman ainre May. On Mondnya, Tueadnya, Wedne*-daya and Friday* he atarted work nt 5 a.m., helping to load meat. After breakfaat he fed the piga and pumped water, cut and carried wood, and did other work at the alaughterhoune. After luncheon he again fed and watered the piga, and then made preparation* for killing. He ns*i*ted the alnughtennnn to kill, and then clean up the offal, unit the hides, etc. Sometime* he did not finiiih until dark. At times he used to remain until 8.30 p.m. to atoke the fires to cook the meat for the pig*. He used ~1 1 the skin the legs of the leasts, lake ir J away the offal, etc. For five or six days he did not help the slnughtrrmau to skin, as he had u row with him. When the slaughterman left he used to pick m up the offal and salt the bides. He hIho el ' worked every Sunday from 1st May to the end of June. Ou Sunday* he fed and watered the pigs, cooked bones, and did other work. He claimed £6 per wek from May to August, (£tf5), and 3l hours worked on Sunday* (£M 12 lid). From 1th August to 21st Heptember he helped loud meat on four day* a week, and also did slaughtering. Oldfield put a young fellow on n* potman. He did slaughtering on Sundays. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. For this period he claimed seven week*' wages at £5 2a a week, and 21 hours worked on Sundays. £3 13s, He use-1 to live about 150 yards from the slaughterhouse. His wife whs living with him and often ho!|Hlt;d him with his work nt the slaughterhouse. Oldfield visited the alaughterhou** nearly every day, and helped witness kill on 5 or 6 occasions. Oldfield always stork the pigs.To Mr. Hooke: I worked for the previous owner of the business (V. K. Holmes). He paid no* about 10/ n week. I -lid not do the same work for Holmes. I used to boil the hone* and feed the pigs. I did not pay rent for the house. Holme* allowed me to go into the house, nt a rent of 3/ per week.
