Hei has had the good fortune never to have ] , the unpleasant task of hanging a fellow* mortal, and no prisoner lias ever escaped.* When he assumed charge there were ^ i sixteen prisoners and he leaves behind» him twelve males and one female. He p- has had as high as forty and as low as a, nine at one time confined. Whenever a pI crime was committed in the county he s i j has always captured the offender. They were brought here without any trouble and tried at thes November term of court ami acquitted.Sheriff Walker has been indefatigable I in the discharge of all the duties connected with his office and in every re-sped has been a first-class and thorough-i ly competent official. 'Here is a sketch of the new sheriff:Mr. .Samuel M Warnick, was horn at \ Bloomington, Hurrett county, fit* years ago. His childhood was spent oti his j father’s farm, near Bloomington.When sevcnleeu v»*ars old he enlisted in the First Maryland Calvary, Col. \ er-non, commander, ami served with his regiment until the close of the war. leaving the service with the rank of tirst ser gcant. His chief service during the war was with Hen, Sheridan in tin* Shenandoah Valley, being actively engaged in all the battles from Opequan to Cedar Creek. For tin* last sixteen years he ha- been a resident of Barton, ] ami engaged in the lumber and general mercantile business.
