BEDFORD’S BEXE HIVE. SHOOTING APFRAY! A Quarrel Over a Game of Cards Which May Re sult in a Tragedy. John Wiltee Dangerously Wounded; Ed ward Lemon, Who Did the Shooting, Promptly Captured and Now in dail. On last Friday afternoon, between four and five o'clock, a shooting af fray occurred on Broadway in front of Reath’s bakery, in which John Wilder received a dangerous wound in the left side just below the heart. The facts of the case, as near as we could learn them, are as follows: Edward Lemon and William 8S. Smith had been playing cards, and after they had finished their game they adjourned to the street quarrel ing, Lemon charging Smith with having cheated him. After a few hot words, Lemon knocked Smith down with brass “knucke.” Just at this moment John Wilder, along with several other young men, came up, and Wilder pulled Lemon off Smith, saying, You ought not to hit that old man, Lemon; it will go hard with you.” Then Lemon asked Wilder if he had his pistol. The lat te.” said that he knew nothing about the weapon. More words follow ed, Lemon becoming abusive, when Austin Wilder, the father of John, came up and took part in the alter cation. Lemon then retired to the middle of the street and applied sev eral very opprobrious epithets to the elder Wilder. Young Wilder made a motion to take off his coat, and advanced a step toward Lemon, when the latter drew his revolver and ‘taking deliberate sim, fired two shots, the fhot inflcting the wound described, and the second passing through the door of Sharpe’a mil linery shop lodged in a box of boots. After the shooting, Lemon turned and ran, closely pursued, to the de pot and north on the railroad track ‘to the opera house, where he climbed ‘on a freight train that was pulling ‘out. At the junction he jumped off the train and started in a westerly direction, but had not proceeded over a quarter of a mile before he was overtaken and captured. He was brought back to town and taken to Justice Kramer's office, where an affidavit for assault with intent to kill was filed. He was then lodged in the county jail. In the meantime the wounded map was carried on a litter to bhe home, and Dr. Ben Newland summoned to attend to the wound. At the time of writing, Tuesday, afternoon, Wil der was resting easy, but this condi tion may still be regarded as ex tremely critical. The greatest dan ger to be apprehended is from blood poisoning. On Monday morning Lemon was again brought before Justice Kea mer, and upon waiving a preliminary examination, his bail was set at §5, 000, and leaving no one,to go on his bond, he was taken back to jail, where he now awaite the action of the Circuit Court. Lemon is ‘about 27 or 28 years old, is unmarried and lives with his mother near Guthrie. Dr. William McK. Hester will hold his second quarterly meeting at the M. E. church on the 18th and 14th. He will preach the 13th at 2 and 7 p.m. and op Sabbath at the regular hours. All are invited to attend, S. C.
