San Mateo drops Redwoods, 55-48 Mark Willett l Saath — Wren EUREKA — Rebounding and balance on offense keyed San Mateo College to a 55-48 victory over Col lege of the Redwoods Saturday in the championship game of the ninth an nual Women’s Basketball Tour nament. The Lady Bulldogs (8-1 for the season) grabbed their first lead two minutes into the second half and us ed strong rebounding on the offen sive boards and the outside shooting of tournament MVP Jacklyn O’Con SSee San Mateo outrebounded Red woods, 42-27, including 15 on the of fensive end. O’Connor scored eight of her -high 15 points in the second II as the Bi erased a 30-28 halftime deficit. O'Connor, a 5-foot-9 freshman from Burlingame, was left open most of the game as Redwoods’ 2-3 zone was unable to rotate back in time. O’Connor made the Corsairs by hitting on 7 of 19 shots, most from 12- to 15-feet out. When Redwoods (6-2) did come out to contest O’Connor, she was savvy to pass the ball in low to Angel Mahan. Mahan, San Mateo’s 6-1 freshman center, scored all of her 12 points off easy layups inside. “We use a 2-3 defense as well, so we have a lot of different ways of at tacking it,” said Tom Martinez, head coach of San Mateo. ‘With O'Connor hitting from the outside, the scene pack it in down low on Angel. ‘Had they come out and taken O'Connor, I think Angel would have killed them inside,” said Martinez, who led the Bulldogs to a 29-2 record last season and into the second round of the state tournament. Teri Nord, who was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight year, and Missy Sanders each added eight points for the Cor sairs. Nord led Redwoods with seven rebounds Umpqua 71, W. Valley 53 Sherri Stapleton scored a team high 19 points as Umpqua had four players score in double figures in its win over West Valley for third place.
