Work is still on schedule as winter promises to slow con struction of the new Kansas River bridge at Lawrence. Anderson Construction Co., Holton, Kan., reported this week its workers have nearly com leted the substructure of the Ormont Street span of the new divided bridge. The substructure will be finished when the last two caps are poured and fitted on the sur real piers for the Vermont reel span. After that, little else will be done until the firm re ceives steel girders for the bridge superstructure. The steel is to be delivered during January and February. The girders are laid across the support piers to form the found ation for the bridge deck. Contractor Ron Anderson said the pier caps can be completed within the next two weeks roviding the weather does not ame intolerably cold. The Vermont Street span is scheduled to be built and open to traffic by late fall 1977. When that is opened, the firm will tear down the present Massachusetts Street span and construct a new one in its place. The entire project should be finished by late 1978. The $3.7 million bridge is being financed with bonds au thorized by voters who in November 1974, approved the expenditure of up to $11.75 mill ion to replace about 50 county bridges. Replacing one bridge with two over the Kansas River will pro vide motorists with a four-lane divided span. The new Mas sachusetts Street bridge will be one-way north and the Vermont Street span will be one-way south. The spans will converge on the north side of the river but angle out on the south side and align with Massachusetts and Ver mont streets. Bids were let on the Kansas River bridge in December 1975 and Anderson started work in late April of this year Suspended above the river by a crane, a steel girder is installed on the pillar. photography by bill brnson Workmen from Anderson Construction Co. tighten an outer mold into which concrete will be poured.
