Naranjo Resigns EarlySANTA FE (AP) — Rio Arriba County Sheriff Emilio Naranjo, the target of complaints and lawsuits alleging improper police practices, has resigned.Naranjo, Rio Arriba County Democratic chairman, said he is taking another job. He declined, however, to say what the new post will be.“I have resigned for a better job in the future that will improve my financial condition, he said. It will be financial protection for me and my family.Naranjo, a delegate to the 1976 Democratic national convention, did say the job is not that of U.S. marshal for New Mexico, a post he held from 1966-68. He said his application for that post remains active, but said he doesn’t expect the Carter administration to make that appointment until well into the new year.Naranjo and his deputies have been named as defendants in several lawsuits.In a court case pending now, Naranjo and several deputies are charged with a violation of the constitutional rights of several plaintiffs in connection with a search. That suit was filed by several persons and La Clinics del Puefttor A report by the attorney general’s office recommended a fullscale investigation of alleged abuses by county officials, including law enforcement officers.In another court case, the sheriff and deputy Baltasar Archuleta were exonerated on charges that they conspired to deprive six persons of their civil rights in a search.Naranjo said he was stepping down while testifying Thursday In the trial of Moises Morales, the La Rasa Unida party candidate for sheriff in November.Asked what job he held, Naranjo told the court he didn't have one, then explained he had resigned as sheriff.Morales is charged with possession of morethan.eight ounces of marijuana.Naranjo and La Rasa Unida have engaged in a long and bitter feud involving a number of incidents such as the Morales case. Morales claims Naranjo's deputies planted the marijuana on him then made the arrest.Naranjo has made some sharp charges of his own against La Ram.These strangers who come from different parts of the country and organized Rasa Unida thought that Rio Arriba was fertile ground for agitation and militancy and their radical philosophy, Naranjo said earlier this year.Rio Arriba County Commission Chairman Archie Medina said Naranjo submitted his resignation, effective Dec. 1, to the commission in a special meeting Monday.Medina said the commission named Under-sheriff Anthony Griego to fill the remainder of Naranjo's term, which ends Dec. 31.
