,026 Yauks Die Seizing TarawaCostly Toll in Gilberts Is Bared; Total Casualties In Italy ListedWASHINGTON, Dec. 2—The Navy Department announced today that 1,026 American troops were 'killed in the landing on the island of Tarawa, in the Gilberts, while 2,557 were wounded.Seizure of Makin Island, also in the Gilberts, was much less costly. There, 65 were killed and 121 wounded, while one man was killed and two wounded inthe occupation of Apamama.Secretary of War Henry L. Stimsonrevealed. K^anwhile, that total Americancasualties of the war were 14,321 killed; 32,690 wounded; 23,418 prisoners and 24,490 missing.U.S. losses in the Italian campaign, he said, have been 1,81! killed, 7,091 wounded and 2,670 missing—a total of 1 1,572.The Secretary said that 1,610 American prisoners of war have died in enemy prison camps, mostly in Japanese-heldterritory.Stimson said that the North African “big three” meeting indicated thatemphasis on the war against Japan would be disclosed with new operations.
