J,Mr. Davis was born in North Carolina,■ i'zAugust 9,'“1812, of'Quaker parents, and was brought up a member of that churcit His father died when William was quitf young, and his mother marrying again, left North Carolina in 1828, at the earl age of 1C, traveling all the long aud wear distance froru that State to Indiana on fodt and alone, arriving at Mr. John Herron'flj father of William Herron, now living ore. Bear Creek, Jennings county, where he: stayed over night, having just 37J cents, of “two bits” as it was then called, in his pocket. His firet work done in these parts, was for Solomon Stout, making rails air three bits per hundred. This was in 1829. jHe next worked for Enoch Thornly, and in 1830 he worked by days work for Jacob Sibert, and in 1831 w«b married to Mhsj| Jane Sibert, daughter of John Sibert, his present widow, who now survives him. They began life together poor but honest, and with an abiding laith in each other that led them to dream of belter days, and lived the forty-two years of their married life on the old homestead, where the widow now lives.
