She lieliavedr. herself like any well hred engine ' r the first two nights, but on the third the watchman heard strange noises ! 11 issuing from all parts of her, noises 11 unlike anything he ever heard be-1 fore. This continued every night, 1 ■ and was heard by his brother, who ! ' came to keep him company in the ' uncanny place. Then the story got ! n abroad that there was a haunted | . engine at the shop, and believers s and unbelievers began to flock ] a around. The noises continued to !_ be audible. There was a rapping, [ now in the tire box, now in the boil 1 er, and anon in the smoke stack, as ' though some person inside were 4 striking the iron with a inutiled 1* stick, and a hollow and dismal rever- be rat ion followed each blow. }I The most careful and thorough . examination failed to disclose any i trickery or the possibility of any,, ami the impudent spirits would keep 1 t up the racket even while the scru- ! r tiny was going on. People go to* the engine house and stay nights to : hear the manifestations, and it is* related that one young man who * , was making unseemly jests about ** the ghosts suddenly grew deathly 1II pale and fell in a swoon. When he ! recovered he said he saw a ghostly 1* figure glide out of the engine and 1 I point its bony finger at him. 1* There are divers theories to ac \i count for the business.
