tAQE 3-B THE QATESVILLE MESSENGER, THURSDAY, PS An accident claimed the lives | of three *deer hunters, one of 5 them a Baylor graduate and J father of a Gatesville woman, Z during a week end trip to the s Davis Mountains in West* Texas,* Dr. Vern B, Spiva, dentist, Z Henry Schmidt, rancher and : motel owner, and Rudolph ; Smith, rancher and auto store downer-all prominent citizens of S'Fredericksburg-were asphyxi-: ated by a gas heater they placed : in their trailer.* Dr. Spiva was married and Jthe father of two daughters-* Mrs. Edwin (DcDe) Powell of S Gatesville, who teaches kindergarten, and Dr, Deborah Spiva, *a Dallas cancer research •worker. Mrs. Powell is the wife ;of Gatesville ‘ attorney Edwin I Powell.; The bodies of the three men j-were found early Monday : morning by other members of :the hunting party on the Posey •Ranch north of Van Horn.: Dr. Spiva, 58, had been a* dentist in Fredericksburg sincein Accident1946. He attended Baylor University and graduated from the university's dental school in Dallas in the early 1940s.He was a sports lover and used to recruit football players for the university. Roger Edens, treasurer of the Baylor Alumni Association, said Monday, He was a great sportsman and loved Baylor and Baylor football, it is a real tragedy for the university to lose such a figure. sDr. Spiva also was president of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation in Fredericksburg and a member of the school board.Services for Dr. Spiva were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Laverne (Dippy) Spiva; two daughters, Mrs. Powell and Dr; Spiva; his mother, Mrs. V. D. Spiva Sr. of Fredericksburg; and a sister, Mrs. C. H.
