Findlay High's wrestling team dominated the upper weight classes, win ning four of the last five matches, and bolted to a 33-23 victory over Fostoria in the season opener here Wednesday night. The Trojans, trailing 20-12, roared back behind pins by Bruce Heater (155), Randy Smaltz (175) and Walter Schramm (Hwt.) and a decision by Tim Thomas. ‘Heater took Bill Lawson to the mat in the first 20 seconds of the 155-pound con test and put him away in 37 seconds. Tim Thomas, trailing 4-0 midway through the second period, followed with his decision to put FHS on top for good, 21-20. Thomas got on the scoreboard with a reversal in the second period, and after escaping from Curtis Reinhard in the third stanza, won dramatically with a takedown in the final 25 seconds of com petition. Randy Smaltz followed by pinning Fostoria’s Josh Goddard in 3:46 in the 175- pound match while the Trojans’ heavyweight, Walter Schramm, stopped Frank Gutkowski in 3:18. Fostoria’s Brian Chapman, who posted a 15-5 record last season, took a 3-2 victory over Hank Kramer at 185 pounds. Each wrestler escaped before Chapman’s third period takedown provided the winning margin. Fostoria broke on top with two straight pins before Findlay’s Lee Smith worked over John Knox 7-0 in the 112-pound bout. Findlay’s Jon Redman (119) posted a 3-3 draw while Tim Geoghegan (132),won 7-3 and Steve Rettig (138) 11-3, . Redman, forcing the action in the third period, was trailing 3-2 before escaping against Cal Park while the Trojans’ Chip Frey led 4-3 before losing to Fred Blose (126) on an escape and takedown in the third period. Fostoria, aided by three forfeits, cap tured the junior varsity match 33-32. Greg Beatty (145) and Mark Weber (155) had pins for the Blue and Gold. Findlay returns to the mat at 2 p.m. Saturday in Bellevue.
