You sure can’t afford to give them any turnovers, especially in the final seconds!”Canyon guard Sharon Brown was credited with checking Cheryl Hartman’s scoring drive in the second half of the game. Hartman was still top point-maker for the Swiftettes with 22, while Glenda Gerber added 12 and Karen Schulte 11. Doretta Ramaekers accounted for the other 2 Nazareth points.Guards who saw action for the Swiftettes were Colleen Gerber, Germaine Pohlmeier, Lynora Braddock. Marlene Huseman and Lori Gerber.Canyon was leading at the end of the first quarter, 10-8, then the lead switched to Nazareth with the same margin, 22-20. Again the third quarter lead was held by Canyon with two points, 38-36.The lead changed every quarter in the Friday game, too, with South Oak Cliff leading 4-12 when the first period ended, Nazareth 27-23 at the half and SOC 38-36 at the start of the final quarter. Hartman paced the Swiftette scoring with 24.“Beating the state 4-A champion team was our biggest thrill of the tournament,” Cox said, “but we knew we’d had a battle when we came out ahead of Hale Center in the opener. This was the fourth district champion we’ve beaten this year and it was the toughest of the four.”Again, Hartman was tops in scoring for Nazareth with 26 points. The Swiftettes led throughout the game, when scores were 13-9 in the first quarter, 27-25 at the half, 41-34 after the third.Another high school teamin the tourney was Slaton, where the coach who guided the Swiftettes to their state win, Cathy Wilson, is in her. first year. Slaton lost to SOC in the first round, but in the finals defeated Silverton for fifth place.Miss Hartman represented Nazareth in the queen’s contest at Plainview, cheered by the scores of Nazareth fans who went to the tourney to support their team.“She was a standout in the contest as well as on the gym floor,” Cox commented.Preceding the tourney, the Swiftettes met Kress Tuesday i of last week for a 71-39 vie- j tory. Gerber had the high point total in this game, 28, while Hartman tallied 20 and Schulte 13. The defense showed improved intensity to help assure the win, Cox commented.(iil
