C., successfully flew a heavier-than-air motorized craft.“At the Gastonia mill where I was then working, a card grinder dashed onto my floor, ran up and down the aisles, wildly shouting: ‘They’ve done it! Rode in a flying machine!”THE WORD had been passed along by telegraph, and of the 21 newspapers offered it, only 6 used the story. One paper in Dayton, Ohio (the Wright Brothers’ home town), rejected the story and refused to pay 22 cents toll for details dispatched from Norfolk, Va.Traveling East this month, you can share in a recall of that historic event at Kill Devil Hills, Dec. 17.
