Spanish Sculptor To Exhibit WorkAn exhibition of sculpture by Spanish-born Miguel Gusils, now a Middlebury resident, will open at the Vermont Book Shop Art Gallery on Dec. 8.Born in Barcelona, Spain, Gusils studied at the Institute Mendelez i y Pelayo and at the Escuela cle | Artes y Oficios in Barcelona, and ] also studied under a scholarship awarded by the French govern- j inent. As a member of the “Group of Eight,” composed of painters, sculptors and poets, he helped Barcelona to become known in Spain for its contemporary movements in art and writing. He has i exhibited in Spain and in the 1 United States. jAs a sculptor he works in a wide variety of materials which include steel, bronze, stone and plaster, His work is unusual because he welds scraps on simple metals, nails, wire and sheet metals into interesting shapes and designs which have strong textural surfaces. This original treatment indicates a strong imaginative grasp of the materials used, according to Patience Haley, director of the gallery.Miss Haley said everyone is welcome to attend the exhibition, which will be open every day during book shop business hours.
