use T.B. Seals, Chairman Urges4 4When you began to think of writing Christmas letters and sending cards, think also of the Christmas seal sale and the way it helps prevent T.B. If you have not already sent your contribution to the Tuberculosis Assn., do it now and use the seals on every letter you mail,” Mrs. S. D. Babcock, county seal sale chairman, urged this week.“Look at the two coordinated Christmas seals. On every pair of the 1955 seals, tw'o beaming children carry on the happy tradition of exchanging gifts among friends. For 49 years, Americans have used Christmas seals to symbolize their gifts to their Tuberculosis Assn. for better health for themselves and their neighbors. The artist, Miss Jean Simpson, is one of the youngest whose designs have been chosen for Christmas seals, and she is also only the fourth woman designer since Emily Bissell created the first American Christmas seal in 1907.“Miss Bissell knew that busy as we are with Christmas plans, we still have time to feel for those who wron’t have Christmas. Many fine efforts to relieve human suffering have had their beginnings in this Christmasspirit. There was an editor once—a rare one. I’m sure, who didn’t understand the American attitude toward Christmas.“Christmas with suffering and disease? His readers wouldn’t stand for it, he told Miss Bissell who came to him for help. A small tuberculosis hospital that was experimenting with new methods of treating the disease was to close for lack of $300. The patients were to be sent home; their hope of recovery destroyed.“Miss Bissell had read of the use of Christmas seals on holiday mail in Denmark to raise money for the sick and needy. A friendly printer had printed her design on credit, but she needed an opportunity to tell people about the fight against a disease which was the leading killer in the country. When the editor refused her request, she interested a columnist in her project. Here was a way for people of small incomes as well as wealthy philanthropists to express the true spirit of Christmas. The editor was persuaded to give the Christmas seals full publicity,$3000 instead of $300 was given to fight TB |What will you give?’’ asks Mrs Babcock.MC19V;irbirirsio:Wlinlt;2]3iclt;ScTSIASMSPgirov0irt)Etif]tiLasPtlt;hat:n0h
