OSHKOSH, TUESDAY, DEC. 1, 1885. “STATE NEWS. There are eleven in the county jail at Sheboygan. There were forty-four deaths in Mil waukee last week. There is said to be a prospect that a shoe factory will be started at She boygan. Twenty new parlor cars and day coaches have been ordered by the Chicago Northwesten railway. The chairman of the county board of Fond du Lac county signed orders for $12,000 in one evening. Officer Conron, who has been po liceman in Fond du Lac for twelve years has been suspended. The cause of the removal is drunkenness. Ashland Prese: The total shipments of ore from the Vermillion mines for the season foot, up 225,000 gross tons. La Crosse creditors will lose a total of about 34,000 on account of the in solvency of D. D. Merriman a Quincy lumberman. On account of the funeral of Vice President Hendricks Judge Gresham will not be in Madison to hold United States court until Thursday. Samuel Blascoer, dealer in general merchandise at Marshfield near Madi son, has been closed up by the sheriff. Liabilities, $18,000; assets, $15,000. The consumption of water in Mil waukee last week aggregated 101,343, 436 gallons, an average daily increase of 99,695 gallons as compared with the corresponding week last year. Olson of Madisor forought suit against Andrew Flom of the same city for $5,000, claiming that drainage wa ter from defendant's property settled near his house and caused the death of two of his children. ‘The jury awarded him $3 damages. Wm. Snow, a Madison carpenter, dislocated his hip 28 years ago. Re cently while making a quick motion the limb was straightened and now af ter having been a cripple long years is now as straight and sound of limb as any man. A. A. Kelley of Fond du Lac, major of the second regiment of the state militia, and others have formed a firm to cut ties and bridge material for the Ilinois Central. Their saw mill is lo wet about 13 miles from Lexington, a8. The trouble in St. Hedwig's Polish church at Milwaukee is said to be far from being settled. It appears that the trouble is over the retention of Father Rodowicz. Part of the con gregation wish him to be the pastor and some want another man. At Milwaukee some person or per sons unknown arranged three beer kegs above the main door of the Bay View M. E. church so that they would fall upon anyone opening the door from the outside. The trap was dis covered by the sexton, who luckily entered from a rear door, so that no one was hurt. It is glad that_the Chicago, Milwau kee St. Paul Railway company, in paying its employes’ on the 25th, throug its leading officials, directed them to abstain from visiting drink ing places, and to be ready for duty at any time on or next day after the holiday. ‘Those who had Thanksgiv ing lay-offs had to keep perfectly tem perate. The papers at Manitowoc do not say much as to the probable guilt or inno cence of young Morris accused of murder, but they state that some of the questions of the attorneys indicate a state of affairs in the neighborhood where the crime was committed which would justify the hanging of a good share of the citizens on general principles. Beloit Free Press: It is regarded almost a miracle to save the life of a horse afflicted with a case of well de veloped lockjaw and when such a thing does happen it goes on record to the credit of the person performing the cure. Helot's veterinary surgeon Dr. John Kunz, cured a bad case of Jackjaw in a horse belonging to Charles Hopkins, last week. On Tuesday, September 16, 1834, a young Woman named Miss Aurelia Caron of Fort Howard, fell from the Walnut street bridge at Green Bay and was drowned. Suit for $5,000 was shortly entered by the lady's father and the case has now come ‘to trial. ‘The Green Bay Gaztte says: John J. Tracy and Gabe Bouck will appear for the plaintiff and C. F., Vroman for the defense. A great deal of interest centers in the trial, and it will doubt less be warmly contested by both par tes. Railroad graders working in La Crosse unearthed seven human skele tons Saturday. ‘The two last perserved were examined by Dr. George Powell who pronounced one the skeleton of a white man and the other he believed to be that of an Indian. A La Crosse paper says, the fact of finding these remains beneath a cellar gave rise to a great many surmises, but the reasons hile likelihood is that they antedate the settlement of the city. Dr. Powell thought from the looks of them that they had been in the ground more than twenty years. Within a little over a week past there have been received in Milwau kee two hundred delicately perfumed missives, each envelope addressed in a round, school girl hand, and each con taining the photograph of a young woman and an application for a seat in the oucline convention to be held at the dime museum in tha city. To each successful candidate for ducline honors, a salary of $25 per week was guaranteed and a chance to secure one of two handsome prizes, each valued at $125. Two hundred young women received circulars who considered themselves eligible wider the terms named, and wrote in reply each send ing her photograph. Of the 200, forty were selected to appear in the con vention. One applicant says she is a neice of Charlotte Cushman, one in a Stevens Point girl, and another is a St. Louis miss. Seven Milwaukee girls are also successful applicants. Three others are from elsewhere in Wisconsin and the others from Uli nis, Michigan and Missouri.
