Gene Abbott, who volunteered for the Army, and went withthe first bunch of selectees fromAnson, in November 1940, has seen service in France in the Airborne Artillery, but he has never written his folks whether he went over with the initial attack on D—Day. He has been sent back to England on aecouni~of -an attack of malaria which he developed in the Sicilian campaign.In his letters home he cannot tell much about what he is doing.Gene took his basic training atFort Brown near Brownsville, wassent to Fort Bliss and was in the last remaining horse calvary in the Army, and his outfit is now in the South Pacific but has been dismounted. In January 1943 he transferred while at Fort Bliss to the paratroopers and was sent to Fort Benning, Ga. for his training. First of May 1943 he sailed for North Africa and took part in the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, making jumps in the landing, at Salernoand Anzio. *♦Pvt. Dane Abbott, who was working with his brother, Coyfct at Ventura, California, volunteered for the Army, and is a mechanic in the Army Air Forces. fDane is with the 14th Emergency Rescue Boat Squadron and is somewhere in the southwest Pacific, and has been in this theatre for 15 months. He is on the water most of the time and is rated as engineer for his boat.Oren also volunteered for service from Ventura but he elected to go to the Navy. He is rated a motor mechanic first class, was wounded while on sea duty in the South Pacific by bomb shrapnel which hit his leg, and is now doing nicely and is located at San Pedro, Calif.He is now taking some kind of training but can net divulge theonEX. CARPENTERS VISIT RELATIVES IN COUNTY1ofE. L. Carpenter and familyDimmitt spent Saturday to Tuesday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Carpenter, and brother, J. O. of Neinda, and L. O. of Hamlin, and Mrs. Carpenters sister, Mrs. Louis Wright of Hamlin.Elmer Lee’s baby, Patsy Rue, has been ill two and a half years, Mr. Carpenter having taken her recently to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester,Minn, for the second time. She is \♦ten years old.The two older children, BettyJoyce and Elna Floyce, who had been visiting their grandparents two weeks, returned to Dimmitt with their parents.H. H. Cox, father of Mrs. Carpenter, makes his home with the Carpenters and helps in operating the M System grocery store whileElmer Lee is away.
