LYNCH TALK AT TYLER AS BRIDEASSTYLEB, (UP)— Lynch talk was heard today here as groups of ctizens kept watch for the return of J. D- Willis, charged with kidnaping a newly wedded couple and criminally assaulting the bride. He was spirited out of the back door of the county jail yesterday while a mob screamed for his life from the front.Authorities feared violence ii Willis wag returned here today to face a grand jury. He was held in jail somewhere in the vicinity but where police refused to reveal.Th 19-year-old ex-convict waspositively identified by Maxwell Herring and his lS-year-old bride whose honeymoon was interrupted last night. Willis was arresteddriving their car, with Mrs. Herring’s engagement ring in hispocketIt was believed the grand would return an indictment against Willis today, whether or not he was permitted to testify before it. He may be tried laterthis week.The Herrings had stopped their machine at a roadside soft drink stand. A man climbed in, pressed a gun against Herring’s side and 1 forced him to drive 10 miles to a woods. There Herring was made to strip to liis underwear and was tied to a tree. The bandit told Mrs. Herring to undress. She refused, was slapped, knocked down and assaulted while her husband strained at his bonds, helpless to intervene.Mrs, Herring was bound to another tree. A few hours later, Willis was arrested in Palestine. He denied the Herring’s charge, saying he had been given S10 to drive the machine to Houston, by a strange man whose name he did not knowOfficers said Willis had served time in the Louisiana State prison. He is married and the father of two children.Soon after he was put in jail a mob began to form which rapidly grew until the street was blockaded.
