'f W. H. Dills, Sev’f.i--B.**•P,I.i.10i-(IF.v,tnitt*!•1rFobt Wayne, Aug. 27, 1864. Mr. Dawson: We have noticed with injured feelings, the subjoined local editorial in the Sentinel, of the 25th inst., in regard toithe prosecution of one of our Hebrew biethien. Gustave Greensfelder, who was arrested, prosecuted and lined on the 26th Inst., by the Mayor, for retailing liquor on Sunday. The editorial implies that out simple minded brother violated the ordinance of the city against selling liquor on Sunday—in disregard of the Christian Sabbath as distinguished and differing from that recognized by the Hebrews; that istlt;* say, he not so much offended in violating the ordinance as in holding in contempt the first day of the week—Sunday. Our reasons for so infering are, that he is named as “a gentleman of Hebrew descent, and declared to he ver/ zealous in keeping the sanctity of his own Sabbath, but seems In have very little respect for the Christian Sabbath.” Do we not infer correctly in this? Why name him as a Jew,” or a “gentleman of Hebrew descent,” and make the distinction invidious by not affixing the sect to which other offenders belong.when noticing their arrest and trial? The reason is obvious that it is because he is a Mew”—and we cannot see what his re-igious regard for the Hebrew Sabbath ha* to do with the selling of liquoror the violation of any other ordinance or law. There is no law fur ‘Mews” which is not equally so for Gentiles. He cannot disconnect hi-personal from his religious character and make him specially guilty as a “Jew.”— His^crsonafc is only known to the law—-and that identity recognized so far as he is a citizen—it might be Jew, Gentile or Infidel. At such a ffing at one of our number, as a member of the Hebrew church, we feel aggrieved. The article is the more unjust, and more particularly offensive, f um the fact that there are a great many other places in thiscity at which any our can get for pay a glass, or like quantity of liquor, any Sabbath day—anil they not kept by Jews, and who go unpunished—not even being re-ptnvtd hr being Catholics, Protestants, or Infidels. Many of these are very ostentatious establishments, whose keepers have some position—and as they are likely to contest every prosecution, few are comment ed—-we suppose because they do not, as our broths/ does, plead guiltj and pay up the fine and costs. It looks to us very much, in his case, like persecution for the sake of his money— and yet we do nlt; t in any way justify o excuse such breach of the law; nor is it tolerated by our church. When he or any one shall be proven guilty, let the penally be measured out; but let full justice be done by making all liable who err in thatwav, and liable onlv to the extent of the• 9 •spirit in which they offend. ^iiev.
