Hurricane Warnings Hoisted Along The Atlantic Coast |As Storm Surges MainlandMiami, Fla., Aug. 30—(lt;P)—Hurricane warnings were ordered hoisted from Wilmington, N. C., to Cape Hatteras, N. C., early today as a violent tropical hurricane surged toward the mainland with winds up to 12ft miles per hour.Northwest storm warnings were ordered aloft north of Hatteras to the Virginia Capes and northwest storm warnings south of Wilmington to Charleston, 8. C.The full fury of the raging giant twister which now covers anarea nearly 300 miles in diameter' was expecto to reach the North Carolina coast by nightfall.‘‘This is an emergency, warn all interests,” the Federal Storm Warning Service said in special advisory issued at five a. m. “All measures should be taken for the protection of life and property.” Residents along tin North Carolina coastline were warned that winds would begin increasing by mid-day. That gale winds would be sweeping in from the sea by late afternoon, and that the center of the hurricane would come screaming inland by night.Hurricane hunter aircraft probing the storm in the early morning hours reported it was moving in a northwestward course at about 10 to 12 miles an hour.In the northeast quadrant of the storm always the most violent they found winds up to 125 miles per hour.The storm was located at five a. m. about 250 miles south-southeast; of Wilmington.O’uef Forecaster Grady Norton said there was some indication the hurricane may curve to a more northerly course during the day. ‘‘It would mean,” he said, ‘‘that the center would pass more over in the Virginia Capes area”.First discovered August 2ft by a Russian freighter, the storm has moved for the past five days (Turn to Page Six)Head of Red Underground 9s SubpoenaedNew York, Aug. 30 (.P) TheHouse in-American Activities Comnii be today served a subpoena on J. Peters, described by Whittaker Chambers as the head of the Communist, underground in the United States.Peters, who also Is known as Alexander Stevens, was ordered to appear at a committee hearing scheduled here for two p. m. today.The subpoena was served bv a committee investigator at; a hearing on the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
