Mudd, son of former Master Mechanic Geo. W. Mudd, and well known in this city:W. H. Mudd, night yard conductor In the Toledo Ohio Central yards, fell between two cars in the south end of the Bucyrus yards Friday night at S:50 o’clock and had both logs crushed iibovo the knee. lie was taken to the Crawford county hospital and is now In a ward at that Institution. Ho is terribly injured and may die.Hr. Mudd has only been employed by the Ohio Central.Tor live weeks, beginning work on the nineteenth of July. Ho is a married man, having a wifo and two children.The accident happened as the night yard crew* was switching a train of gravel cars. Mr. Mudd attempted to “cut off” a couple of cars while the train was moving but found that bo could not release the coupling from the side of the train on which he was standing. He jumped 011 the car to cross to the other side and it is though he reached down and attempted to lift the coupling lever. He lost his balance and fell between the cars. Assistance was secured and the badly injured man was carried down Gallon street to the Crawford county hospital. xThe surgeons made an examination of Mudd’s injuries at once and found that while the hones of both legs were badly crushed, the main arteries were intact. He was in no condition to stand amputation and after a consultation it was decided to try and save both logs. Dr. Chesnoy, the company-surgeon, has not a groat deal of faith in the possibility of saving the man’s limbs but every effort will be made to do so. If it is found necessary to abandon this course, both legs will be amputated as soon as Mr. Mudd rallies sufficiently to stand the operation. One thigh bone is terribly crushed and If the one limb is saved it will be several inches shorter than normal.This morning the Injured man was resting fairly well and had rallied somewhat. It is hoped that his condition will Improve hut at this tlmo the outlook for his recovery is not bright. '■The injured yard conductor came here from Toledo five weeks ago. Ho is a young man and was formerly employed by llio Iron Mountain railroad at Lit lie Hock, Arkansas, lie was formerly a telegraph operator and is an experienced railroad man. Ho Is quite well thought of by his fellow-workmen and pcqualn lances and all were greatly shocked at the accident which has befallen him.Mudd exhibited great coolness after his Injury and talked freely to the men who were caring for him.
