Mrs. Louise Howard s Funeral Today-A Remarkable Carer.Mrs. Sarah Louise Ituward, one of the best known colored women of Ohio and11 la«!y of remarkable talents, died at her home on East avenue at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Howard was a refined and intelligent woman, and hadbut few peers in this city. An account of her life is remarkable. Her father., Daniel Meads, was a slave and seventimes was he placed on the auctionblock and knocked down to the highest bidder, but he escaped and came to Ohioin the citv of Mansfield in 1838Sarah Louise was born. She was taken care of by a family by the name of Kile}* with whom .lie lived until she was fourteen years old, when she came to Elyriato live with her sister.When a little over 20 years cf age her sister died, and she married her brother-in-law, Mr. Samuel J. Howard. This union was only broken thirty years afterward by the death of Mr. Howard which was seven years ago. Mr. Howard was a very reputable citizen of Elyria and, one of its, best barbers during hisentire life in this city.Mrs Howard for some years, com!acted a greenhouse, but her great interest in literary and society matters soon took so much of her time that she was una-le to do this work. She was a*r of the First Congregational church iu which she was an active worker, and a member of The Relief Corps,Richard Alien Post, No. 108, and for some years presidentof the Historical Socity of Lorain coun-She was a great reader and her large aud well selected library shows continuity of thought. She has given manybooks to the public library of Elyria.was considerable of a traveler and neverleft home but what she returned withisome 1-nc-a-brac of singular historical in-| terest.She has gathered a tine collection ofshells, corals and minerals of many kinds The corals aud shells by condition of the will, will be given to FiskeUniversity. The minerals which shehad numbered and classified with perfect accuracy, she has not provided forbooks will remain in the house. She was an adept at fancy work and inmuch beautiful work, aud xnanybeauti-designs iu hammered brass can be seen at her home. The sec lection of pictures and (other adorn me nt s in her home show a t cultivated taste of which few can boast.She has been active in her different enterprises until within the past year when she lias been ailing and during thepast six weeks raftering considerably, dying finally of internal cancer. The funeral was held ar her late home on East avenue on Thursday at 3 p. m. the Rev. W. E. Cadmus officiating. The ladies of The Woman's Rebel Core- attended in a body, and many prominent people at Elyria did homage to this remarkable woman.
