Today-A Remark- ^able Careralt;*Thlt;,: jprMrs. Sarah Louise Howard, one of the J*1best known colored women of Ohio and 1wcca lady of remarkable talents, died at aer home on Hast avenue at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. He ward was a refined and intelligent woman, and had but few peers in this city. An account „ of her life is remarkable. Her father, I. vDaniel Meads, was a slave and seven.times was he placed on the auctionblock and knocked down to the highest ,.bidder, but he escaped and came to Ohioand in the city of Mansfield in 1838 1£ Sarah Louise was born. She was taken .ucare of by a family by the name of Rileywith whom die lived until she was four-ladlt;teen years old, when she came to Elyriato live with her sister. j .When a little over ‘iO years cf age her £ sister died, and she married her brother-in-law. Mr. Samuel J. Howard. This clt;union was only broken thirty years afterward by the death of Mr. Howardwhich was seven years ago. Mr. Howard was a very reputable citizen of Elv-na and one of its best barbers during hisentire life in this city.Mrs Howard for some years conducted a greenhouse, but her great interest in literary and society matters soon took so much of her time that she was una-le to do this work. She was alember of the First Congregational church in which she wasan active worker, and a member of The Relief Corps,Richard Allen Post, No. 108, and for some years presidentof the Historical Socity of Lorain conn-»ty-Shmwas a great reader and her largeand well selected library shows continuity of thought. She has given manybooks to the public library of Elyria.Site was considerable of a traveler and. neverdileft home but what she returned with . tl some bric-a-brac of singular historical in- . cc terest.She has gathered a tine collection ol S, shells, corals and minerals of many ai kinds The corals and shells by coudi- rl tion of the will, will be given to Fiske cc University. The minerals which she Ehad numbered and classified with perfect li ccnracy, she inis not provided for The bi books will remain in the house. She cilt;*was an adept at fancy work and in ol much beautiful work, and manybeauti- hadesigns in hammered brass can lie seen ather home. The seelection of pictures and j G other adornments in her home show a » aicultivated taste of which few can, boost. , She has been active in her different \ uIenterprises until within the past year : hi when she lias been ailing and during the ' sij wist six weeks suffering considerably, tl dying finally of internal cancer. The \m funeral was held ar her late home on tlEast avenue on Thursday at 8 p. m. the n Rev. W. E. Cadmus officiating.
