Tils English Rivkr Murder.—Judge Williams returned from Washington county on Saturday Iasi, whither he had gone to enquire into ihe causes of the arrest of Huldah Lowry and Isaac Gillam, charged a9 being accessory to the murder of Don Ferdinand CaufTman and his child. They were both discharged from custody, ihe proof being entirely insufficient to warrant Ihefr commitment to prison. The murder of Cautfman and his child is unsurpassed as an act of atrocity. The facts as 6hewn upon the examination are substantially these : Cn the 4th o£ August instant being the Sabbath, CaufTman, his wife and child went to spend part of the day at Lowrey’s. Upon their return to their house, as they were passing by a field, on the road some two hundred yards from Lowrey’s house, a rifle gun was discharged from the field, the ball entered the child’s body near the heart, passed through the body of the child, and entering the side of CaufTman and piercing nearly through him, lodged near his shou'.der-blade in the opposite side. The child died in about an hour after* ward, and the father treaihed his last in about twenty-four hours. The child was about two years old* sod when the shot was fired, the father had it in hi* arms. A man whoso name is William McCauley is now in prison, charged with the murder. He was arrested and committed on proof of the following facts.— For some time before the murder, McCauley and Ihe wife of CaufTman had formed an improper intimacy, and carried it so far as to e-lope together twice. CaufTman had gone after his wife each time, and procured her return home. McCauley aiso returned to the neighborhood. Enmity of course ensued between them, and threats were passed. On the dav of the murder, as Mrs. Lowrey and Mrs. CaufTman were on their way to Lowrey’a house, about mid-day, CaufTman having tarried some distance behind, they met McCauley with his rifle. Mrs. Lowrey told him he had belter be “ putting,” for CaufTman was coming; be said something, and went into ihe field by the road side, and they passed on to the house. Nothing new occurred until Cauff-man and his wife and child were on their return from Lowrey's house, when the murder was perpeira»ed by a rifle shot from the field. The rifle gun and a handkerchief belonging to McCauley were found lying near the place from which the shot was fired. McCauley was immediately suspected as the murderer, searched for, and was net found until about a week alter, when he was taken in a field in the vicinity of Wappellc. The neighborhood was in a great excitement. Hundreds left their harvest fields, and continued the search until McCauley was taken and safely put into custody of the law. Much credit rs due to the citizens of Washington for their zeal to sustain the supremacy of the law in this horrible affair. CaufTman was a young man— hie wife is also young. McCauley is about twenty-three yeara of age.
