Two Afghan boys wounded in their country’s 6-year-old war with the Soviet Union arrived in Sacra mento for free hospital care as part of a private effort called “Project Afghanistan.” Mercy Hospital of Sacramento is the fourth hospital in the United States to accept Afghan children for medical treatment under the project organized by the California Committee for a Free Afghanistan. One of the boys, 11-year-old Jehan Zeb Khan, was wounded when he picked up what he thought was a metal toy bird. The device, a mine dropped from a Soviet aircraft, exploded and blew off part of his face. Cindy Abela, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said Wednesday the youngster is blind in one eye and may lose his other. He also lost the fingers of one hand The other boy, Abdul Hai, 17, was the only survivor of an attack by Soviet soldiers on a bus. Hai survived a bullet in the rain but suffered an eye injury and may undergo a cornea trasplant at the Sacramento hospital.
