ICG ExtensionStudy Plans forBy MIKE O’NEAL Preliminary plans for the Governors State university commuter train terminal were reviewed by trustees of the Chicago South Suburban Mass Transit district (CSSMTD) Monday evening.The terminal area will be located east of Governors highway on both the north and south sides of Steunkel road in Park Forest South. Facilities at the station area will be designed to serve both commutersfrom the Park Forest South area and GSU students.The terminal area will be located at the end of a two-mile extension of the Illinois Central Gulf railroad’s electric suburban service from its present terminus just north of Sauk Trail in Hichton Park. The extension project is being funded through grants from the federal Urban Mass Transportation administration (UMTA) and the Illinois Department of Tran-Grant Intersection ImprovementIntersection improvements at Sibley boulevard and State street lt;Indiana avenue) are on the state's 1975 agenda according to a letter given to the villages of Dolton and South Holland.Get VacationCosts for the improvements of left-turn bays and signals, right-turn signals and street widening will be borne by the state along with engineering fees. Bids will be let by the State Highway department, also.However, both Dolton and South Holland must each pay 50 per cent of energy cost of the signals. South Holland will reimburse Dolton for its share every three months.Maintpnanra nn the inctallatinn will hasportation (IDOT) under the sponsorship of the CSSMTD. Also included in the project are the purchase of 15 additional Highliner commuter cars and the installation of reverse signalling between Homewood and Richton Park.FACILITIES at the terminal area will include a passenger station and platform with underground ramp entrances, an electric power substation, a storage yardStohrer said this is a common occurrence for a large project of this type especially when contractors don’t know about material costs and are afraid to bid on a long-term job.South Holland Trustee Bob Nowicki said, “It’ll take six months to get materials, only. Improvements could be in by next fall at the earliest.for 36 Highliners, a crew locker room building, bus terminal and two parking areas. A large parking lot and bus terminal would be located east of the ICG tracks while a smaller lot and bus terminal Would be located west of Governor’s highway.A 300-foot underground tunnel will connect the two parking facilities with the station. From the tunnel ramps will lead up to the station platform. Ticket vending machines and electronic gates will be located underneath the station, along with a public washroom. Waiting room tavilities will be located on the platform level. The station building was designated by the architectural office of Mies Van Der Rohe.The station building and parking lots will be located north of Steunkel road. Also north of the power substation will be situated north near the intersection of Steunkel and the ICG. east of the tracks.
