By DAVID McLEMORE San Antonio police officials Wednesday said they feel certain some organized crime here is syndicate con nected. “We are sure that book making and narcotics acti vities in San Antonio are linked with the Mafia,” Chief of Police E. E. Peters said. “‘But we lack any definite proof that the connection exists.” “There have to be ties to the Mafia in the two areas of bookmaking and narcotics,” Peters said. “Those two show long range connections to several points in northern U.S cities and to points south of the border.” “But we just have no proof linking them to the Mafia.” Report Chief Peters and officials in the Vice and Metro Squads said Wednesday they have not seen the re port released Tuesday by the Texas Organized Crime Prevention Council. The council’s report stat ed that organized crime is a one billion dollar business in Texas. Local police verified the reports statement that no Texan has been positively identified as a member of the Cosa Nostra or Mafia. Another crime syndicate, known as the Dixie Mafia, allegedly has 213 members in Texas, according to the report. Police said there are no known Dixie Mafia members in San Antonio. The Dixie Mafia, which operates primarily in Texas and other southern states, allegedly controls the book ing of pornographic movies in some San Antonio theaters, police said. “All I know about the re port is what I’ve read in the newspapers,”” said Capt. James Despres, head of the city Vice Squad. Prostitution “To my knowledge, there are no organized prostitu tion rings operating in San Antonio,” he said. Bookmaking and other illegal gambling activities are investigated by the City Metro Squad, headed by Lt. Charles Doerr.
