Rutherfordton Attorney Heads Democratic Executive Com mittee—Elected Wed nesday In Harmon ious Meeting. Rutherfordton, Aug. 2 meeting of the Democratic County Executive Committee was held in the court house in Rutherfordton on Wednesday, August 20th at 2 o’clock ym. County chairman C. O. Rid ings called the meeting to order and GC. Hardin was appointed to act as secretary. There was a good at tendance and the meeting was har monious throughout. Mr. C. O. Ridings, who has serv ed as chairman for several years, stated that the purpose of the meet ing was to select a chairman and that it would be impossible for him to serve in that capacity longer. Upo his emphatic statement that he could not serve, the Executive Committee accepted his resignation and express ed to him the thanks of the Demo cratic organization for his past ser vices with a rising vote. Thereupon, after some discussion, Mr. Stover P. Dunagan, attorney, of Rutherfordton, was unanimously elected county chairman. Mr. Duna gan was not present at the meeting but immediately upon his election a committee was sent to notify him and request his appearance before the Committee. ‘Mr. Dunagan accepted the nomina tion in a very appropriate speech, excerpts from which follow: Confidence, in Party. “It has been my desire to retire, from active politics, but at a critical period such as the people all over formation are experiencing at this time, I conceive it to be the duty of every conscientious citizen to put forth his, or her utmost efforts to the nd that the masses of our people may be relieved of the heavy burdens of taxation; that confidence may be res tored; and the thousands, yes, mil lions of unemployed given work— Which can only be accomplished through the principles of Democracy. I believe the Democratic Party is the only path by which our govern ment can get back into the hands of the people. Under such conditions as now exist I could not refuse to perform the full measure of duty to the community in which I live, to the utmost of my ability. 4 .Under the present chaotic condi tions it is indeed a high honor and privilege to be called upon to serve in any capacity. While I do not de serve the honor conferred upon me today, I trust that with the united co-operative efforts of everyone— the inevitable success of the Demo cratic party in the coming election will prove to be the beginning of a new and better era. “The Democratic Party has made some mistakes in the last few year s have no defense to offer for these mistakes, except to say that such brove errors do not occur when we follow the principles of true Demo cracy and follow the advice and counsel of true Democrats. We have learned our lesson well and never again will this generation (and I trust no other generation) be forced to suffer the serious conditions fa ing us now. Scores Party Leaders. ' “Yes, our party is under fire, but trange to say the self appointed “Joan of Arc” to deliver the people ofutherford county, is the one man more responsible than anyone else for our predicament. While senior member of the law firm, serving as counsellors of Chimney Rock, Moul ins, Inc., Th Farmers Bank , a ‘ust Company, and The Comme cial Bank, and Rutherford County, he dictated the policies of these i stitutions for approximately five years. He had an opportunity to s erve its county and give some relief, and save us from our pres ent predicament. And yet the rec ords show the greatest extravagance ever known before or since. As result of his policies Chimney Rock Mountains, Inc., is “busted,” these banks are wrecked, and our county crippled so badly, it will take som time to recover, to say nothing of the thousands of people suffering (many broken up) financially. He cannot evade his responsibility, by issuing a ‘“‘smoke-screen,” in an ef fort to place the blame elsewhere. ‘The public records prove the facts and before the campaign closes every voter in Rutherford county will know its motives now are prompted by a selfish desire to regain his control over public affairs so that he can continue to bleed the taxpayers of Rutherford county, ad miing his own personal fortunes at their expense. With him in full dom ination of the Republican Party, and with a reorganized Democracy ‘mili tantly fighting the rights of the mass es, resting upon a platform of real economy and retrenchment. I predict the greatest Democratic majority in the history of Rutherford county. “In accomplishing this purpose the public demands that candidates or one and every true citizen work unselfishly and unstintedly until our county once again rests upon al sound basis, and to never again com promise or surrender to any other policy.”” real At the conclusion of the accept ance speech there was some discus sion as to plans for the Fall cam paign.
