COVINGTON. Aug. 25. We are getting a little rain occasionally, just what we want. Threshing is about over with. The turn -out was not so large as last year, nor was the quality of oats as good as last year. The recent rains have made it good for the farmers to do their fall plowing. Market:—Corn, 40 to 45 cents per bushel; oats 20 to 35 cents per bushel. A number of our democrats will attend the congressional convention at Cedar Rap ids next Wednesday. Miss Terresia O’Connell spent several days of last week at the county seat, Mr. Lorenz Spellerberg and Mr. Maloney, were callers west of town one day last week. Most of our schools will commence Sept. 1st. A number of parents anticipate sending their children to the high school this fall. The C. M. St. P. Company is now busy cleaning their track. This is a move in the right direction. There is a scarcity of empty houses in town at present. Mr. Henry Christopher and Geo. Spicer took a lying trip up to Van Horne last Monday on business. They returned home on the 8:45, Miss Katie Christopher spent last week at Cedar Rapids with friends and relatives, Mrs. Walter and her daughter, Mrs. Max well and her three children of Frank Pierce, Iowa, are visiting at Mr. J. G. Engel’s. Mrs. Walter is a sister of Mrs. Engel. They had not met for sixteen years. Johnny Wieneke, son of Mr. John Wien eke, left for Sioux County, Iowa, one day last week where he will attend school until next June. Our pretty school ma’ams are all at the county seat attending the normal, Miss Katie Brecht, of Iowa Bluffs, spent last week with Miss Ida Wienske. A large number of our young folks are camping on the Iowa river south of here at this writing. They will bring home plenty of fish to be sure, Mr. John Wieneke entertained relatives from Norway, Iowa Bluffs and Hardin county, Iowa, over Sunday. The young folks southwest of town en joyed a dance at Mr. Henry Wieneke's last Thursday night. A good time was reported by all. It seems as though the lively part of our population are all at Marion this week I am sorry to say that our little burg has been very dull the past week, but it must be because our pretty young school ma’ams are all attending the normal at Marion. The new iron bridge across Silver Creek at this place is nearing completion. The new bridge at Gibney’s across the same stream is finished, and another bridge will be built at once at Silver creek school house.
