(From St, Stephen's Review,)Itl* now pretty well known that the Stoke Park Club has for the time being ceased to be, but bo many untrue stories are told about it that it is as well to give the facts, especially an they are very creditable to all concerned. Mr. Chareley, the proprietor of Stoke Park, was involved in a lawsuit over another property which resulted, the other day, in his losing £20,000 right off, and having regard to the very heavy outlay he has made ou the club, and the large sum still required to establish its success, he came to the conclusion that the undertaking was too much fer him, and that it would be best to cut the loss and get out of it. What that loss was may be judged from the fact that Mr. Chareley had disbursed over £4,000 in hard cash for faraiture and pictures bought at auotion Bales, while for months the wages account of men engaged on the property, eras over £100 a week. More than this, in relieving himself of the estate, he sacrificed some £17.000, Although the Stoke Park has thus failed, it is highly probable that the failure is but temporary, as I understand that negotiations are actively progressing in various quarters to secure it as a Racing Club. One of the bait authorities in England reports that a course better than any in England, except Ascot, can be made there, and, we may, after all, see the Windsor fixtures transferred to Stoke Park.Lord Shrewsbury has now the largest number of cabe of anyone in London, viz., 135. Not content with this, however,he has made a new yard at Battersea, close by where the new bridge is to be, and this yard when completed will hold 200 cabs and 500 horses.
