n»JHfMih Of B. w, DcFtmc*.Onee again is the Bar of Mercer Go, called upon to mourn the death of oo^ of Its me niters. 1, Hou. Robert M. DeFrance died at his residence in Mercer oil the evening of the t9lU instant, and although he has not been actively engaged in the practice of his profession for several years, it is fitting that we, ids late associates, should offer some tribote to his memory : Robert M. DeFrance was born in Mercer county. Pa., on the 22d day of July, A. D. 1828, and was, therefore, at the time or his deutii, in the 51th year of ids age. He received a collegiate education, aud some time after lie had graduated, he entered as a student nf law in the office or the Hon. Samuel Griffith, and having pursued the customary course, was duly admitted to the bar iu the year 1853, His career siuce then la well known, not only to his brothers in the profession, but to the people of Mercer county.With the latter, or at least with thoee of the people who professed the same political faith, he was at oue time a universal favorite. Twice was he called by them to responsible public positions, once to the Legislature, aud, more latterly, to the Constitutional Convention that framed the present Constitution ofthis Commonwealth.As a lawyer, and it is in this character alone we desire to speak of him, our deceased brother was a model of Integrity. He regarded his office as an attorney as a highly honorable and responsible one, and heuce he never felt it hiB duty to resort to trickery in order that his aide might triumph atthe expense of justice. He was uot a brilliant advocate before a jury, but was a souud and safe counselor, aud always commanded Ills attention of the Court. His sterling integrity and clear sense of right, saved many who sought his advice from .fruitless litigation. Honesty of purpose was his distinguishing characteristic, and the brief tribute, “Here lies an honest raau,” might truthfully be inscribed upon his tomb.To the bereaved family of our late brother we extend our earnest sympathy, although we feel that in view of the sad affliction under which he had suffered for a number of years, that death to him was a release from a life that had become a burden.Johnson Pearson, 8.
