CLARKSBURG — Joseph Campinelli Jr., 48, a former Wellsburg police of ficer. Wednesday was sentenced to 25 years in a federal prison by Judge William Kidd in U.S. District Court. Campinelli entered a plea bargain agreement on federal charges with U.S. Attorney Hunter Smith in July in con nection with racketeering charges and interstate transport of stolen property in connection with the Oct. 19, 1984, burglary of the William Snow residence in Follawsbee. Kidd sentenced Campinelli to a 20-year term in a federal prison in con nection with the Racketeering Influenc ed and Corrupt Organizations Act and a five-year term in a federal prison in connection with the interstate transport of stolen property charge. Campinelli also has entered guilty pleas to charges filed in Brooke County and is expected to be sentenced on those charges by Judge Craig Broadwater in Brooke County Circuit Court on Sept. 10. Campinelli has been in custody since he was indicted in November 1984 by the Brooke County grand jury on numerous charges dating back to 1972. Campinelli jumped bond shortly after being indicted, but was arrested by FBI agents in Arizona and returned to Brooke County in early 1985. He was held in Brooke County until being transferred to a federal holding facility where he remains. Kidd did not give Campinelli credit for the time he has already served. Under the plea agreement, Cam pinelli also faced a fine of more than $250,000, but the fine was not imposed. Kidd did impose a mandatory $100 special assessment against Campinelli. On a motion by Smith, Kidd dismiss ed a charge of conspiracy to the RICO Act also filed against Campinelli. Campinelli is to serve the terms im posed by Kidd and Broadwater in a federal medium security prison. Under the plea agreements struck with the U.S. attorney's office and Brooke County Prosecutor David Cross, Campinelli is to provide in for Brooke County. Campinelli served as a Wellsburg patrolman for nearly 14 years. He was not a member of the Wellsburg Police Department when the first round of in dictments were returned in November 1984.
