EnterpriseSportsLions bump Kirbyville in first scrimmageBy CHUCK SUTLIVE Enterprise Sports EditorLIVINGSTON - All Livingston High School football teams made good showings during their first scrimmage of the 1978 season here Friday.Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity squads faced respective groups from Class AA KirbyvilleThe freshmen came out on top four touchdowns to one The junior varsity tied 1-1 while the varsity first team outscored their opponents 2-1 and the varsity second team salvaged a tie, 1-1 Under the rules of the varsity scrimmage, first and second offensive squads from each team began the scrimmage running three plays from their own 30, followed by three from the 40. three from the 50, three from the opponent's 40. four plays from the opponent's 30. 4 plays from the 20 and four from the 10 yard line If a team did any one of a number of things (including failing to make a first down in three plays, making a first down, scoring, losing the ball to an interception or fumble the ball advanced to the next 10-yard increment Therefore, it would be possible for an offensive team to gain no yardage on three plays and then have the ball advanced 10 yardsAfter the number one offensive squads from each team had faced the number one defensive squads of their opponent through this series, the number two squads met in the same three play seriesThen the number one Livingston varsity off ense ran 20 plays and the Kirbyville number one offense ran 20 plays 10 plays by each of the two teams number two offenses ended the scrimmage Sound confusing^It was even more confusing to watch The end result of all ofA FEV4 MORE 3 \RDS...N4illie Barnes hustles for a few extra vards while earrving Kirbyville taeklers with him. Barnes hauled the ball for 62 yards on seven carries to lead the first team varsity Livingston in rushing.loss of nine yards.The Wildcats fumbled te ball twice, during the series, and lost it both timesOf the six times they advanced another 10 yards, Kirbyville made the move three times after gaining first downs, twice after losing fumbles to Livingston and once after failing to gain a first down on a third down attemptDuring the 20 plays portion of the scrimmage, a failure to gain a first down on three tries moved the ball back to the 30After being slid back to start on two series of downs, the Lions got going and in nine plays moved to score Donell McGowen notched the big play of the drive on a 20 yard scamper that carried him from the Livingston 46 to the Kirbyville 34.Willie Barnes had long runs of 14 and 16 yards, the latter setting up a six yard scoring plunge by fullback Kevin Singleton.During th is second part of the scrimmage, Livingston seemed to have warmed to their work, totalling 99 yards rusing on 13 plays.The Livingston secondary tightened during the final part of the scrimmage allowing no pass completion on two attempts and picking off one interception.Coupled with a defensive front line which sacked the Kirbyville quarterback three times for 11 yards in losses, the Lions stalled the Kirbyville drive four times.Second team varisityThe Livingston number two varsity teams showed a similar slow start followed by a fast finish.During the three play series, Kirbyville moved the ball almost at will on the ground, ripping off gains of 19 and 25 yards and finally scoring on a 32 yard dash.The Livingston offense managed three firstdowns in the series.Three times, the ball was advanced to the next 10-yard increment due toa failure to gain a first down and once on an interception.The second team offense failed to score during the three plays series although they did move the ball to the Kirbyville one yard line on the series of plays from the 10.When the two groups came back for 10 plays each during the final part of the scrimmage, however, Livingston was a changed bunch of football players.The second team Lion varsity defense held Kirbyville in check never allowing them past the 35 and at one point, shoving them back to the 19.The Livingston offense on the other hand scored in seven plays on a five yard run by Leo Parker which was set up by a 42 yard gallop by Gary Davis.LIVINGSTON KIRBYVILLE41 288 Rushing 42 177 5 12 1 Passing 4 10 154 P vdg 5716 First Downs 11 1 0 Fumbles lost 8 5LIVINGSTON LEADING RUSHERSGary Davis. eight carries 69 yards.
